Firebase Is Great, But Is It Still the Best Choice for Game Backends?

Hi All! I have not been involved in building gaming projects since the beginning of my career, but now I am working on a few of them. Indeed, I have been evaluating backend options for a multiplayer mobile game project, and I am curious what everyone is using these days besides Firebase. Firebase has always been the default recommendation, but after digging deeper, I started running into a few concerns: - Vendor lock-in - Complex pricing as projects scale - Limited backend flexibility - Difficulty migrating data later For simple games, Firebase is still solid. Real-time databases, authentication, analytics, and push notifications make it easy to get started. But once you move beyond prototypes and start thinking about long-term growth, things get more complicated. One platform that caught my attention is Back4App. Unlike Firebase, Back4App is built on the open-source Parse Server ecosystem, which gives developers much more control over their backend architecture. That means you're not completely tied to a proprietary stack if you ever decide to migrate or customize things further. A few things I liked about Back4App for game development: - Real-time features for multiplayer experiences - Built-in user authentication and account management - Cloud Code support for handling game logic on the backend - REST and GraphQL APIs out of the box - Open-source foundation, reducing long-term lock-in concerns - Easy database management through a clean dashboard What surprised me most was how straightforward it felt compared to building custom backend infrastructure from scratch. For indie developers and small studios, it seems to hit a sweet spot between flexibility and ease of use. I've also noticed several developers mentioning that Back4App's pricing tends to be easier to predict than Firebase once user numbers start growing, although I'd love to hear real-world experiences from people running larger games. For those building: - Mobile games - Multiplayer games - Casual online games - Social gaming apps What backend are you using today? Are you still all-in on Firebase, or have platforms like Back4App, PlayFab, GameSparks, Supabase, or custom Node.js backends become your preferred choice? I would love to hear what is working best for production-scale game backends in 2026. Waiting for your response.
