Blizzard has announced that World of Warcraft Classic will be releasing a new server for the Wrath of the Lich King pre-patch.
World of Warcraft Classic: The Burning Crusade is currently in the final stages of the sourcebook, with the next sourcebook, Wrath of the Lich King, already announced. Blizzard announced in a blue post on their forums that new realms will be added with the release of the Wrath of the Lich King pre-patch.
World of Warcraft Classic launches on August 19, 2019 with hordes of players looking forward to experiencing the original version of the game. World of Warcraft Classic is currently in the middle of its first expansion, Burning Crusade. On April 19, 2022, Blizzard officially announced the second sourcebook, Wrath of the Lich King.
The closed beta for World of Warcraft Classic: Wrath of the Lich King is expected to begin in Summer 2022. In a blue post on the Blizzard forums, developer Kaivax stated that "with the release of the Wrath of the Lich King Classic prepatch, we intend to open up the New Beginnings zone to players who want to experience a new character to start and play with other new communities". All Classic and Burning Expedition zones and dungeons can be played through by players together, but the newest continent, Northrend, will be completely locked until the official release of Wrath of the Lich King. Players on these new servers will also not be able to create Death Knights unless they already have a level 55 character on the server.
No date has been set for the Wrath of the Lich King pre-patch. World of Warcraft Classic has struggled with faction balance on the server from the start, and the Burning Expedition only made the problem worse. The new realm will allow players looking to return to Wrath of the Lich King to do so without being at a major disadvantage compared to World of Warcraft Classic veterans. Since the release of World of Warcraft Classic: Season of Mastery, there has been a lot of community speculation about Wrath of the Lich King.
With players unable to upgrade or transfer their characters to these territories for 90 days, it's clear that Blizzard wants to create a community for returning players. Also, it will give players who want to level up their "alt" characters of different factions the possibility to do it on an already populated server without being forced to have a big disadvantage. Blizzard recently announced that it will be merging the servers of the North American and European server groups to address this faction imbalance.
However, many players may find this counter-intuitive. Given the camp imbalance and dying servers in World of Warcraft Classic: The Burning Crusade, adding more realms could only exacerbate the problem that Blizzard has only recently attempted to fix. There is no guarantee that these servers will not go out of balance themselves or die out on their own at some point. Players will likely upgrade on these new servers to hold out until release and then simply return to their main servers.
