The topic of one-night stand relationships has been touched upon since ancient times. In the plots connected with this, as a rule, one of the participants was portrayed as an insidious seducer (or temptress), and the second as a naive victim of shameless debauchery.
This is largely due to the culture of attitudes towards sex in different countries, where intimacy was inextricably linked with the appearance of children and subsequent marital and parental responsibilities. Because one-night stands weren't meant to be, and, in the eyes of many, undermined the traditional values of society, the topic of one-night stands—especially for women—was heavily tabooed. But among men, such connections were allowed, but there were restrictions for them.
It was not until the late 1990s and early 2000s that the topic of one-night stand began to be actively discussed, and in connection with this, the term hookup culture became popular. Within this culture, sex without commitment, open relationships, one-night stands, "friends with privileges" and so on were allowed. The main value was not the romantic component, but the freedom to satisfy one's physiological and emotional needs through an intimate relationship, without implying a sense of guilt. Back in the first season of Sex and the City, Carrie Bradshaw says she decided to try a "male approach to sex" that allowed casual or one-time relationships for the purpose of pleasure. Thanks to the media, this idea spread and actively existed in the culture until the COVID-19 pandemic.
Historians and sociologists have not yet determined a single time frame for the existence of this culture. Evolutionary biologist Justin Garcia and others have described the rise in dating, a form of casual sex, as a "cultural revolution" that began in the 1920s. Historians D'Emilio and Friedman date the beginning of a new culture of sex, including college dating, to the early 1800s, and attribute this phenomenon to the formation of historical and cultural forces. Lisa Wade, a sociologist, documents that 19th-century white fraternity men often engaged in what might be called sex with prostitutes, poor women, and the women they enslaved.
Since the 1920s, there has been a transition from the era of courtship to the era of dating culture. Technological advances such as cars and movie theaters have taken young couples out of their parental homes and out of their watchful eyes, giving them more freedom and more opportunities for casual sexual activity.
The sexual revolution of the 1960s led to a weakening of sexual morality, which allowed the separation of sex from relationships, and extramarital sex became more socially acceptable.
Support for sexual freedom has become increasingly popular as new ideas and beliefs have emerged about the positive and negative aspects of sexual intercourse. It has become more widely accepted that having sex was not necessarily always about procreation, but rather placed more emphasis on physical pleasure. Several factors influenced this new outlook, including the repeal of 1930s censorship laws against sexually explicit content in the media, and the growing availability of birth control pills, condoms, and other contraceptives.
