Greubel Forsey GMT Earth

The latest version of the Greubel Forsey GMT brings a new dial treatment, new case decoration and more.

Greubel Forsey's GMT watch may have a short name, but it's one of the most complicated watches they make. The watch displays the time in two time zones; on the back there is a world time dial that takes into account daylight saving time in the observed time zone and, most notably, a 3D model of the Earth that rotates every 24 hours. To date, the watch has been offered in a variety of metals and dial treatments, but the latest version is the most visually refined to date. The dial now has a multi-layered sapphire chapter ring, and the case is adorned with Greubel Forsey's signature "Mission Statement" engraving. The Earth is now fully visible from both the dial and movement side of the watch (unlike the original GMT, where the South Pole was not visible)

This latest version will be called GMT Earth. The increase in visual complexity does underline the highly mechanical flavor of Greubel Forsey watches' appealing mad scientists and provides further space to demonstrate their mastery of the finest traditional watch finishing techniques in the world.

Why this watch matters
Greubel Forsey watches are unlike any other brand of watches. The combination of a very extroverted aesthetic, an extremely theoretically and technically complex watchmaking process, and one of the most rigorous methods of traditional hand-finishing techniques in horology, make them unique in modern watchmaking in many ways – That means any new timepieces they debut are big news for connoisseurs.

initial thought
As a general rule, it's hard to assess the impact of any watch without seeing it firsthand, but my experience is that this is especially true of Greubel Forsey watches. It's not just the fact that the metal is hand-worked more hypnotically than ever in the photos. This is also why they use depth in the design, dial and movement composition, combined with the very intricate deployment of brushed and polished surfaces, to give the impression that you are looking at some sort of miniature city under the glass.

As in the case of Greubel Forsey, the core timepiece of the GMT Earth is the 24-second inclined tourbillon. From the very beginning, Greubel Forsey has been delving into the basic concept of the tourbillon, which was originally designed for pocket watches (when Breguet patented the invention in 1801, the watch did not exist) and whether the tourbillon could fit into a wristwatch The problem. The tilting tourbillon attempts to solve this problem by ensuring that the adjustment mechanism is hardly ever in the most extreme (perfectly vertical or fully horizontal) position.
