Poker is the only game that pays you while allowing you to create your own edges. I should know; I've been playing casually for ten years. Here are three epiphanies that changed my game:
1. Conservative is the way to play - if you still live in the 70's. A term has been coined by professional poker player Daniel Negreanu: cautious aggression. What this means is that you want to play a lot of hands, and fight for a lot of pots - but you need to be smart about it. Small bets can be used like sonar to find out how an opponent feels about their hand, but don't put the farm out there. After you've got a sense for how someone reacts under pressure, you can exploit their tendencies later on - when the stakes have risen.
2. It's a long hill to climb. Beating out 3000 people or more takes a lot of heart, a lot of skill and even more luck. Skill puts up a good ***** fight, but in nine hours of continuous tournament play, anything can and will happen. Since you don't win anything unless you survive till the end, tournament play has a ridiculous amount of variance. Keep plugging away, and make sure you allow yourself the time to win by not risking large percentages of your bankroll on one tournament. Not even the World Series!
