To understand the benefits of hypnosis and visualization in sports performance we must first understand what these mental techniques are. In 1841 James Braid, a Scottish physician, first defined hypnotism as: "A peculiar condition of the nervous system, induced by a fixed and abstracted attention of the mental and visual eye, on one object, not of an exciting nature." Aside from being rather oddly worded, this defines the act of being hypnotized rather than the actual state of hypnosis.
