How do you know when it's time to repot a houseplant?

I've had a few indoor plants for over a year, and I'm not sure whether they need larger pots yet. Some people recommend repotting every year, while others say it's only necessary when the roots become crowded. What signs do you look for before repotting, and have you noticed a big difference in plant growth afterward?

I know this thread is a bit old, but I wanted to share what I’ve learned. For me, the biggest sign is roots poking out of drainage holes or circling the pot. Also, if water runs straight through, the soil is too compacted

I check for roots circling the pot or poking out drainage holes. Repotting usually boosts growth. To stay on top of watering schedules for my house plants, I use local rate limiting on my reminder app to avoid spamming notifications.
