What file naming convention actually works long term?

Our shared folders have slowly turned into a mess of files like final.pdf, final2.pdf, final_revised.pdf, and final_revised_NEW.pdf. I want to introduce something more consistent, maybe date + project + document type + version. For those of you managing lots of documents, what naming convention has actually held up over time without becoming annoying to use?

I realize this is from a while ago, but your post about chaotic filenames really resonated. I’ve been using YYYY-MM-DD_Project_Type_Version consistently for years – simple and searchable. What system do others rely on for non-technical team members?

I start every filename with the project date in YYYYMMDD format, then a short description, and finally a version number like v01. Adding the date keeps everything sorted automatically.
