Tor Browser vs Free VPN – Which Actually Works in China?

Hallo everyone, I’m a German student and I’m heading to China for the first time to study. Naturally, I’m trying to figure out how to access websites and services that are blocked there, and I keep hearing about Tor Browser and free VPNs. But I’m not sure which one will actually work reliably, or what the tech differences are. From what I understand, Tor Browser uses a network of relays to anonymize traffic, while VPNs route your connection through a server outside China. The problem seems to be that China’s Great Firewall actively blocks many VPN protocols and even Tor nodes. I’ve read that obfs4 bridges in Tor can sometimes bypass censorship, but speeds can be painfully slow for streaming or research. Free VPNs, on the other hand, often have limited servers, slow speeds, and potential security risks—not ideal for accessing study resources. Has anyone successfully used Tor Browser or 中国像这样的免费VPN recently? Which one gave better speed and reliability? And are there any tips on bridges, ports, or configurations that actually work for students? I’d love to hear tech-savvy advice before I land in Beijing. Thanks in advance!
