hi! i’m a freshman in hs, female runner. i started running this xc/track seasons. i did gymnastics in the past. after quitting gymnastics, i suffered an eating disorder, but before i started running. i started running because a lot of my friends and family do it in the fall, when my weight had gone up a lot. i don’t have any disordered thoughts, my mindset is healthy and living without an eating disorder is so freeing. i don’t count calories, i don’t see running as a way to burn calories, i try to eat healthy but am always up for desserts. i think my eating disorder mind is gone, and i have a very healthy mindset.
but, i am 5’3 and some fraction and weigh about 97-100 pounds, my parents say, it fluctuates. is this too underweight? again i was a gymnast for 7 years and was always really thin and muscular, probably with a similar bmi. my mom is really thin too. but i’ve had lots of injuries. none in xc, but pf and mild shin splints in indoor, itbs and metatarsalgia in outdoor. i hope this isn’t from being underweight, and instead from the bulky, beefy, very heavy stability shoes that i used with rigid foam orthotics (they were prescribed by a podiatrist in the begging of my mild pf) until i realized how much they screwed me up. i ditched them immediately and they shocked my foot and caused metatarsalgia. i am back now and slowly building up in neutral shoes! but could those injuries be caused by being underweight?
basically what i’m saying is i have a comepletely healthy mindset and love to run but i’m not sure if my body is healthy at 5’3 and 100ish pounds. i strength train a lot and have muscle from gymnastics. i want to gain weight if it’s best for me. also, another question: if i did gain some weight, would i get injured? i know some people who had eating disorders, gained weight, and got injured after gaining weight. i eat a lot (oatmeal and pb, avocado and eggs, juice and protein bar, two dinners, pb banana smoothie and overnight oats) with like 5 glasses of whole milk a day too. does anyone have any advice?? thank you!

Being underweight means your body is not getting enough nutrients for some reason. An athlete must have a proper diet and get the right calories. I think you should start eating foods like fish, meat, and dairy in small amounts. You may begin to have health problems because you are skinny. Your bones will be brittle, and your hair, skin, and teeth will be in bad shape. So I advise you to think seriously about your diet. Maybe you need ***** for the best effect. With their help, you can gain the desired weight and stay in shape without too much effort.
