Earth produces a constant background hum, frequencies too low for human hearing but detectable with instruments. These infrasounds, below 20 Hz, are generated by ocean waves, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and even atmospheric turbulence. Yet many aspects remain unexplained. A 2015 study in Geophysical Research Letters confirmed that “microbaroms,” created by colliding ocean waves, generate a nearly constant global hum. Seismologists also use infrasound to detect nuclear tests, meteors, and volcanic eruptions. Still, mysterious signals appear: in 2013, monitoring stations in Antarctica recorded persistent infrasound of unknown origin, possibly tied to shifting ice or processes deep inside the Earth.
Infrasound also affects humans. Frequencies around 18 Hz can cause unease, blurred vision, and even feelings of dread, possibly explaining some ghostly encounters. A 2019 experiment showed that participants exposed to such tones reported sensing “a presence” in empty rooms.
The subject thrives online. A 2021 Reddit discussion with over 30,000 comments speculated whether infrasound could explain UFO sightings or hauntings. One user quipped: “The Earth is the world’s biggest subwoofer.”
The enigma of infrasound lies in its dual nature: both a scientific tool and a cultural mystery. It reminds us that our planet is never silent — its hidden voice resonates constantly, shaping natural events and human imagination alike.
